What is an electrical switchgear?

Electrical Switchgear is where the supply comes into a large building of factory. The supply that comes in for such large buildings are high voltage and high amp. To get such high value, there are many wires run from three or four transformers. In a typical 600 amp run, you would have three 500mcm cables building each network from the transformer. To satisfy a need of 6000 amp service, you would have to join 10 of these networks. This is where the switchgear comes in. The gear is the landing for all of these networks. The gear holds three phases where matched leads are landed inside, thus joining the amps of each network. After this is accomplished, breakers for subpanels (much like your panel at home) are landed to supply power to outside power sources. They call these electrical cabinets SwitchGear because each set of gear has one large throw arm that cuts power to everything supplied out of it. In all, they are large landing sources to bring together all of the transformer power sources. Motor starters are a different entity that are supplied from the switchgear, and are managed by their own low voltage control circuits.
