New European Union eco-design regulations for small-to-large power transformers will set efficiency requirements for 3-phase transformers with a minimum power rating of 1 kVA, used in transmission, distribution and industrial applications, as of July 2015.
The new regulations became effective in early June and include a two tiered approach to measuring efficiency levels, capping the maximum loss permitted for each transformer.
“… We will be working with network companies and OFGEM to ensure that regulation supports the use of these transformers and does not act as a deterrent to investing in new transformers,” said John Parsons, deputy director of BEAMA Power Sector.
Parsons said the European Commission estimates the new regulations will save 16 terawatt-hours annually across Europe.
BEAMA, a UK-based expert advisor on electrotechnical supply chain, worked with CENELEC and experts through T&D Europe on the regulations with the goal of creating a world market for high efficiency Tier 1 and Tier 2 transformers.
